Pseudoobstruction of the Colon ("Ogilvie¢¥s syndrome")

Abstract
Acute pseudoobstruction of the colon has received increasing attention despite of its unclear etiology and infrequent occurrence. Acute massive dilation of the colon, without any evidence of distal obstruction, is well recognized complication in sick, bedridden patients. This condition, first described by Ogilvie who attributed it to "sympathetic deprivation," is termed pseudoobstruction or ileus of the colon. If untreated, distension can cause perforation, peritonitis, and death. Pseudoobstruction of the colon may be difficult to distinguish from other causes of colonic dilatation, which can rapidly reach dangerous proportions such as cecal or sigmoid volvulus, making prompt recognition of this syndrome imperative.
We have had the opportunity to treat a 56 year-old male patient who underwent explorative laparotomy. Here, we report the result of the surgical treatment and the brief review of literature on account of it¢¥s rarity
